Herrin, IL – David Mattingly opened Herrin Drug after graduating from St. Louis College of Pharmacy in 1980. As an independent pharmacy, it offers many valuable products in the community. The store invested in an extensive renovation of the building they occupy. As a result, this building with its awnings, landscaping and murals has brightened downtown. During the coronavirus outbreak, Herrin Drug’s delivery service has been tremendous in filling an important need, especially for homebound elders. The team works well together and is always courteous and professional.

WSIU Public Broadcasting, a service of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, is pleased to announce David Mattingly, R.Ph., owner of Herrin Drug as the new “Business” recipient of the quarterly WSIU Mr. Rogers ‘Neighborly’ award.

“I couldn’t accomplish what we do without this team. They’re excellent, very skilled at what they do, very efficient and very knowledgeable, and they contribute more than I can say. I feel fortunate that I’ve had the support of this community, and I feel like it’s my privilege to serve them. They’ve helped me stay in business. I’ve managed to adjust with the times, continue to thrive and look forward to several more years in it. Our challenge is that we have to evolve with what our community needs,” said awardee David Mattingly.

What is beautiful in this community is the willingness to help each other.

Herrin Drug carries durable medical equipment such as oxygen, hospital beds, wheelchairs and more. They offer a drive-through as well as delivery of medications. The store offers vaccinations so people don’t have to go to the doctor or somewhere else. Herrin Drug offers dry cleaning pick-up and delivery because they felt there was a need in their community to provide that service. It is also a Hallmark Gold Crown store with many beautiful gifts.

Expressing his views on being a good neighbor and what it means to him, Mattingly said, “It means helping others unconditionally without expectations about anything in return. I think my parents probably were a big influence, but my wife and kids are by far my biggest influence. They’re always helping each other, family members or friends and inspire me to do better. What is beautiful in this community is the willingness to help each other. There are volunteers and civic and religious organizations that do a lot of things in this community and for kids in our school districts. There are a lot of scholarship awards.”

David loves being outdoors, and outside activities, like running, cycling or being in the water, are a big interest for him. Sometimes, he likes working in the yard.

“I like to have a low-stress atmosphere, and sometimes that’s difficult to accomplish. We all embrace a lighthearted approach to things, not that we’re not serious about it, but sometimes it makes the day a little more tolerable when you have a lot to do. It’s just easier to get along and makes us even more responsive when people are not so serious about things themselves,” said Mattingly, who is lighthearted and tells jokes.

I feel fortunate that I’ve had the support of this community, and I feel like it’s my privilege to serve them. They’ve helped me stay in business. I’ve managed to adjust with the times, continue to thrive and look forward to several more years in it. Our challenge is that we have to evolve with what our community needs.

“We do not have many stores in our downtown, so Herrin Drug fills the gap. This store is very important to our community. It fills a void by offering services that chain pharmacies just don’t have. David knows each customer and always takes the time to make people feel good about themselves. He does flu shots and takes time to confer with the prescribing physicians. The team practices excellent protective measures and offers clear instructions about how to keep yourself safe when receiving and taking medications. They are an essential Herrin business in every way. What a great hometown team!” said nominator Teresa Isaacs, a customer who has used Herrin Drug’s services since Mattingly opened the business.
