Two colleges and the School of Law at Southern Illinois University Carbondale hosted a conference Monday about the hot topic of school safety.
SIU-C Social Work Professor Hussein Soliman says parents should not be passive about talking with kids about life, including violence they see in and outside school.
"So it's not only the school who are responsible for child behavior, this is your responsibility as parents."
Goreville Schools Superintendent Steve Webb also spoke on the importance of parents and school staff understanding the 21st century kid to prevent events like a school shooting.
"With guns in school, you can have whatever debate you want to but what comes back down to it, they had guns at Marshall County, Columbine, Parkland. That's not always what saves it. Guns are the response, we are the prevention."
Teachers say the conference reaffirmed their knowledge on school safety and they will continue working to keep kids safe.
